Breath works
and will help improve your running!
Four weeks ago I started training for the half-marathon in Seville on January 29th. Since I hadn’t run consistently for over a year, the first weeks have been really tough. Although I knew I’d have to start from scratch again, I still doubted on a few occasions that I would be able to run 21 km again. But I already signed up for the race and really want to take part.
Of course, I’d like to run a personal best but for me, the key is to feel good. So I chose a 16-weeks training programme that focuses on time rather than speed, so the focus is on running longer and longer each week.
On Thursdays however, I also do some speed training, and since we live in the hills, it’s both speed & hill training. I simply run downhill for about 10 minutes and then come back uphill, alternating sprinting and walking.
On week one, I could only sprint for about 10 seconds and then had to walk. On week 2, the sprints got a bit longer -20-25 secs-. The trend continued and on week 3, I alternated sprints of about 30 seconds and walks. This week I sprinted for 40-45 secs each time. And I wasn’t even as red as a tomato! So it does get better.
Not doubt it gets better simply because I have run consistently for a month. Another key factor is that temperatures are going down, which makes a huge difference for me. But I’m also absolutely convinced that Breathwork helps A LOT.
This week, I went running after facilitating a Breathwork session during which we focused on slowly down our breath. Here is the data from my Garmin watch. Even though other factors might have played a role, the difference is considerable, much bigger than over the previous weeks.
I’m glad my pace and cadence improved, but the key data for me is my Heart Rate as it is too high in general (due to a tiny problem with a valve). I’m convinced Breathwork - over the past year and just before running- has made a difference and I believe all runners should include Breathwork exercises as part of their routine.
Running + Breathwork + Yoga = The perfect combination!
